The Slovak National Theater, one of the most important cultural institutions in Slovakia, began writing its history in 1920. Today's Slovak National Theater consists of three components with a permanent professional art ensemble: Drama, Opera and Ballet. Theater sets for all three components are made in the Art and Decoration Workshops of the Slovak National Theater.

The ensembles of the Slovak National Theater perform in two theater buildings, in the Historical Building of the Slovak National Theater, which is located on Hviezdoslav Square, and in the new building of the Slovak National Theater. The Slovak National Theater is a repertoire theater.
Performances on all SND stages take place during the theater season mostly every day (opera and ballet), or every day except Monday (drama).
The theater season lasts from the beginning of September to the end of June.
